Understanding and treating your internal landscape

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views mental health as a reflection of the body’s overall internal balance, including the nervous system, digestion, sleep, and the flow of energy throughout the body. Emotional wellbeing isn’t seen as separate—it’s deeply connected to how the body is functioning as a whole. Rather than suppressing symptoms, acupuncture works to support the systems that regulate mood, stress, and resilience.

Acupuncture is commonly used to help with:

  • Anxiety (racing thoughts, restlessness, feeling on edge)

  • Chronic stress and burnout

  • Depression (low mood, lack of motivation, emotional heaviness)

  • Sleep disturbances (trouble falling or staying asleep)

  • Irritability or mood swings

  • Panic attacks or heightened stress responses

  • Fatigue related to mental or emotional strain

  • Difficulty feeling grounded or present

  • From a physiological perspective, acupuncture may help by:

  • Regulating the nervous system and shifting out of “fight or flight”

  • Supporting healthy cortisol rhythms and stress hormone balance

  • Improving sleep quality and circadian regulation

  • Enhancing blood flow to the brain

  • Modulating inflammation linked to mood disorders

  • Supporting gut health and the gut-brain connection

Care is tailored to your individual patterns and adjusted over time as your nervous system becomes more regulated and resilient.

What to expect at River’s Edge Acupuncture

Here, mental health care is thoughtful, unrushed, and individualized. Your initial visits are 90 minutes, allowing time to understand your full picture—not just your symptoms. This includes your stress patterns, sleep, digestion, energy, and emotional landscape. Follow-up sessions are 60–75 minutes, providing space for treatment, ongoing conversation, lifestyle support, and, when appropriate, custom herbal recommendations.

Care may include:

  • Acupuncture treatments to regulate the nervous system and support emotional balance

  • Gentle palpation to assess areas of tension and systemic patterns

  • Custom herbal medicine formulations to support mood, sleep, and resilience

  • Nutrition and lifestyle guidance to support the gut-brain and stress response connection

  • Breathwork, grounding techniques, and nervous system support tools

  • Ongoing reassessment as your symptoms and stress patterns evolve

Some patients notice shifts in relaxation, sleep, or mood within the first few treatments, while others—especially with long-standing or more complex concerns—benefit from a longer course of care. Progress often looks like feeling more grounded, improved stress tolerance, better sleep, and a greater sense of emotional steadiness. We’ll talk openly about what’s realistic for your body and create a plan that feels supportive, not overwhelming.
